Spiritual Direction

What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction is a one-to-one conversation in which one person helps another reflect on and deepen his or her connection with God. It is about listening to people’s stories and listening for the breakthrough presence of God in the midst of ordinary life. A Spiritual Director helps you see how God is showing up in your life and helps you integrate your experiences of God and your understanding of God. A Spiritual Director may also educate and illuminate on who God is. A Spiritual Director will support and encourage you to attend to and respond to God. “Spiritual growth happens as we gain confidence in God’s love for us, become more aware of God’s holiness and call, and become freer to be honest about our responses and the true state of our inner life.” (Sue Pickering, “Spiritual Direction”)

Why should we listen to God?

  1. We can’t have a relationship with God if we aren’t able to listen and converse with Him.

  2. God tells us to listen to him. “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” (Matthew 17:5)

  3. We often don’t know what is best for us, but God does.

  4. Listening helps us align with God and enter His story.

  5. We are able to help others when we listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

  6. It keeps us out of trouble!

  7. We learn about ourselves and are encouraged, supported and guided to develop our full potential and the fruit of the Spirit will grow in our lives.

“Christ has no body but yours, no hands, no feel on earth but yours

Yours are the eyes with which he looks compassion on this world,

Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,

Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.

Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body…

Christ has no body now on earth but yours.”     -Teresa of Avila
